Patterns of Vowel Nasalisation in Northern Italy: Articulatory versus Perceptual
نویسنده
چکیده
Developments in the Romance-speaking area provide an extremely useful testing ground for phonetic hypotheses regarding sound change. Detailed investigation of nasalisation-related sound changes (e.g. an > ãn > ã) in the Romance dialects of Northern Italy has uncovered a range of pervasive suprasegmental effects. In the long tradition of research on the development of distinctive nasalisation, attempts at phonetic explanation have focussed largely on articulatory causation. However, most recent evidence suggests that many of the sound changes observed in Northern Italy and elsewhere have a substantial perceptual basis.

Perception and representation of Bengali nasal vowels
The paper addresses the question of native speakers’ online awareness and perceptual use of phonetic nasalisation by examining surface nasalisation in two types of surface vowels in Bengali: underlying nasal vowels and nasalised vowels before a nasal consonant. In a cross-modal forced-choice experiment, we investigate the hypothesis that only unpredictable nasalisation is represented and that t...
متن کاملVariability in English vowels is comparable in articulation and acoustics.
The nature of the links between speech production and perception has been the subject of longstanding debate. The present study investigated the articulatory parameter of tongue height and the acoustic F1-F0 difference for the phonological distinction of vowel height in American English front vowels. Multiple repetitions of /i, ɪ, e, ε, æ/ in [(h)Vd] sequences were recorded in seven adult speak...
متن کاملCompression effects and perceptual asymmetries
This paper reports the results of two English experiments on timing and perception. The finding is that temporal patterns in production correspond to asymmetries in perception. We argue that these phenomena are best described in terms of auditory rather than articulatory representations. The production data concern compression effects, whereby, in syllables with a greater number of segments, ea...
متن کاملComparison of vowel structures of Japanese and English in articulatory and auditory spaces
In previous work [1] we investigated the vowel structures of Japanese in both articulatory space and auditory perceptual space using Laplacian eigenmaps, and examined relations between speech production and perception. The results showed that the inherent structures of Japanese vowels were consistent in the two spaces. To verify whether such a property generalizes to other languages, we use the...
متن کاملبررسی ساختار سازهای واکههای زبان فارسی در بزرگسالان دوزبانه آذری فارسی
Objective: Vowels are the center of syllables while formant structures are one of the most important acoustic characteristics of speech sounds that help in their articulatory and perceptual aspects. Formants represent the shape and size of the vocal tract. There exist trivial differences between the vocal tracts of different people due to which the formant structures of a vowel in one person ar...
